Looking for a sweet treat other than candy for stockings? Craisins are still "new" enough to be a little bit of a novelty, but common enough that you can find them in any grocery store at a reasonable price. They do have sugar added to them, so this won't work for everyone -- and be sure to read the ingredients if you want to make sure it's cane sugar and not high-fructose corn syrup. But even if they're sweetened -- and after all, they are cranberries, so you can see why they would be sweetened -- they have all sorts of nutritional benefits that candy is entirely without.
These Thanksgiving Dinner Gumballs would make a cute gift for kids, or for college students who are too far away to make it home for Thanksgiving dinner! There are three flavors: Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, and Pumpkin Pie. I think they would certainly taste.... interesting! But I probably should not indulge myself -- I can't stand the buttered popcorn flavor of Jelly Belly, because the taste is right, but so wrong with that texture! I tend to think of November 1st as the first real day of the "season." Halloween is over (we had 130 trick-or-treaters last night!) and it's time to begin holiday preparation in earnest, especially because my husband's family is in Canada, which means shipping a lot of gifts internationally. I would be the first to say that $13 for 3 chocolates, no matter how big and luscious, is a lot, but I admit I am tempted by the clever skull shapes, and intrigued by the three decadent flavors represented. The product description notes that the gift box has one each of these varieties:
Look at these lovely mint boxes featuring Pride and Prejudice! I almost had a heart attack when I saw the $14.95 price tag for a box of mints, but then I realized that the boxes are laquered and plastic (I'm not quite sure how that works together) and are meant to be kept. The two choices are a box featuring a book cover image from Pride and Prejudice and a box with Mr. Bingley telling Darcy, "Come, Darcy, I must have you dance." Aren't they charming?
Now if this doesn't say "autumn" to you, I don't know what will! Godiva has put together a little bag of individually wrapped "caramel apple gems". There are 18 pieces in the bag, for a total of 6.5 ounces. At $10, that would be about 55 cents apiece -- but hey, it is Godiva! I'm really not a chocoholic, but I have to admit even I find this tempting.

I'm sure it goes without saying that each one features a quote from the man himself! This is something I had never heard of until recently -- tea hearts, or tea pressed into shapes over which you pour the boiling water. This particular tin has 24 "Antony and Cleopatra" black tea hearts, or you can choose 24 "Romeo and Juliet" green tea hearts instead. Each heart makes an 8-10 ounce serving of tea.
This stocking stuffer is only for the brave: curry-flavored "Kali" mints. As I've grown older, I've become far more adventurous in terms of what I will eat, or at least try once. But I'm still a bit of a wimp when it comes to hot and spicy food. So while I probably won't get these for myself.... that doesn't mean they won't make a fun stocking stuffer for those in the "the hotter the better" food camp!

I've always been suspicious of mincemeat, because (like many children, I imagine) I thought it was a way for parents to sneak meat into something they were pretending was a dessert. Not so with this Muirhead Green Tomato Mincemeat, which is made with no meat, but with lots of green tomatoes, apples, raisins, butter, and spices. I'm particularly intrigued with the note that recommends making a bi-layer pie with a "bottom layer of mincemeat covered with pumpkin pie filling (or better yet, a filling made with Muirhead Pecan Pumpkin Butter)." Sounds like a neat alternative to the usual Thanksgiving fare!
As soon as I saw this, I knew I had to post about it right around tax day.... This "Financial Crunch" tin features a banker's dozen (11 pieces!) of chocolate with a "bite" already taken out and a message that says "Bite back!" And biting back gives you that "crunch," which comes from corn flakes. The coins themselves are 2.5 inches in diameter by 0.25 inches thick, and the green and gold embossed tin is 5 inches high by 3.75 inches in diameter.
If you work in one of those offices that can be called a "cube farm", surely you're already familiar with Dilbert. I remember ages ago I had a squishy version of the pointy-haired boss, meant to relieve stress with squeezing. Today's stocking stuffer is a tin of Dilbert Accomplish-Mints. The funniest part, to me, is that the mints themselves come in the shape of the characters, including Dilbert, The Boss, Dogbert, and Catbert. It's my last Wednesday food post before Easter, and I just can't face posting about any more chocolate at the moment. ;-) So instead, today's stocking stuffer (or gift basket stuffer) is a pretty honey jar from Crate and Barrel. They have three varieties: cheese honey, grill honey, and tea honey. I don't know what, if anything, makes one honey better than another for cheese versus grilling, but there you have it! I also admit that I'm a sucker for a pretty bottle or jar. I don't drink hard liquor, but I love looking at all the amazing bottle designs (especially vodka) at the liquor store. And these honey jars are elegant in their simplicity, I think. The description notes that they are 100% natural and kosher certified. If you prefer organic, you might also check Whole Foods or your local grocery store for an organic honey in a pretty bottle.
Last week's Wednesday food post was the Lindt chocolate carrots, this week is Godiva's similar offering: a carrot-shaped toot filled with orange candy-coated milk chocolate pearls. It has a net weight of 4 oz. and looks very elegant, in my opinion!
Aren't these chocolate "carrots" by Lindt adorable? I saw them in the grocery store a few weeks ago. I'm sorry to say I forgot to note down the price, but I think they were under $5. Hard to believe it's almost Easter, isn't it?!
On a recent trip to Williams Sonoma, I saw this lovely box of chocolate truffle-filled eggs. I'm not even a big chocoholic, but it's such a cute box I wanted them! Perfect if you want something a little fancier than the bag of foil-wrapped chocolates from the grocery store.
